CROSSROADS JUDGED TO BE EXCELLENT SERVICE

South Cheshire Crossroads Caring for Carers, a local social enterprise providing respite breaks to carers and their families, has just been awarded excellent status by the Commission for Social Care Inspection. During a recent unannounced inspection, all aspects of the service were examined and carers, families and staff who work for Crossroads were asked what they think of the service.

The inspection report indicates that South Cheshire Crossroads has received an excellent rating.  This is the highest rating achievable under current inspection standards.

South Cheshire Crossroads Caring for Carers provides practical and emotional support to Carers and people with care needs in their own homes and in the community. The organisation currently supports over 225 families across Cheshire including Young Carers. A Carer may be a friend, neighbour or relative who is providing support to someone else, either within the same household or living elsewhere, who would otherwise not be able to manage without that help.

Lucy Whiting, Manager said:

“This is a huge achievement, and we are all very proud! Our staff work extremely hard to ensure the service is delivered to a high standard and we are always interested in hearing from carers and their families about what they think of the service”.

The CROSSROADS team celebrate the award

Community projects that will bring fun, fulfilment, and positive life skills for people of all ages are at the centre of 148 groups across the North West to share in over £640,000 today, in a new round of grants from the Lottery’s Awards For All programme.

Awards for All is the small grants scheme run by the Big Lottery Fund on behalf of Lottery good cause funders, the Arts Council England, Big Lottery Fund, Heritage Lottery Fund and Sport England. Awards for All makes awards of between £300 and £10,000 to grass roots community groups and voluntary organisations.

One of the projects to be awarded finding is South Cheshire Crossroads Young Carers Project. The project, which aims to offer essential respite to young Carers aged between 6-18 years old, has been awarded £4,932 towards a programme of leisure and social opportunities.

Young Carers are young people whose lives are affected by caring for a family member who has a long-term illness or disability, mental health issue, or possibly addiction to drugs or alcohol. They might be a parent, brother or sister, or perhaps a grandparent.

Lucy Whiting, Manager at South Cheshire Crossroads said

“Today’s announcement will make a huge difference to the types of activity we can offer to the Young Carers in our project. The project gives young people a break from their caring role, the chance to meet other young Carers and take part in activities they may otherwise not engage in”.

SOCIAL ACCOUNTABILITY

We are delighted to announce that South Cheshire Crossroads have just completed their first set of social accounts. The accounts provide an analysis of the views of over 300 people who took part in an extensive consultation process over the past 6 months. Social accounting provides a method whereby organisations can measure the extent to which they live up to the shared values and objectives they have committed themselves to. To sum it up, social accounting enables an organisation to prove and improve.

If you would like a copy of our accounts, please feel free to download a copy from our Information File page. If you would like a paper copy of the full accounts then please send a cheque for £12.50 (to cover print and p+p) made payable to South Cheshire Crossroads to Lucy Whiting, Scheme Manager, South Cheshire Crossroads, 1a Welles Street, Sandbach, Cheshire CW11 1GT. They offer an opportunity for you to find out more about our organisation, the
services we offer and how those are valued by the people who use them.

CROSSROADS CARING FOR CARERS CHESHIRE ASPERGERS SOCIAL SKILLS PROJECT

Following a successful bid to Cheshire County Council, the four Crossroads schemes within Cheshire have been awarded funding to establish social skills groups across Cheshire for Adults with Aspergers Syndrome.

The groups will follow the highly successful project originally piloted by Chester Crossroads where the group has already been running for 3 years. The groups will meet on a monthly basis, and will provide services for 6-8 young Adults aged from 18 onwards. The groups will be situated as follows;

·        One group in East Cheshire

·        Two groups in Central Cheshire

·        One group in West Cheshire – referrals would come to this group from both Chester & Ellesmere Port.

The groups will be managed by Crossroads Staff, with individual group sessions facilitated by a Speech and Language Therapist. The SALTS will be responsible for a range of tasks relating to the delivery of the groups, including taking appropriate referrals, assessing clients needs and the completion of appropriate paperwork. They will lead the sessions, with support from a SALT Assistant and from a suitably trained Support Worker from Crossroads. There will be an open referral process and referrals will be taken from a range of sources including; Carers and their families, local Carers groups, National Autistic Society, Health professionals, Social Care agencies. The service is free to adults with Aspergers and their families.

The benefits of this project are not only to improve the social skills, confidence and independence of the adults attending, but also to offer essential respite breaks to families and Carers.

It is hoped that the project will commence in September 2006 but referrals are already coming in! If you would like further information about the project or would like to make a referral please contact your nearest scheme.
